TDSB Takes Action in Response to Climate Crisis

Categories: News

We are pleased to share that we are making significant progress in our efforts to combat climate change, with initiatives focused on reducing carbon emissions, improving sustainability, and promoting environmental education. You can learn more in our newly released Climate Action Report.

One highlight is the success of an energy pilot program, which helped 25 per cent of TDSB schools save $1.35 million in utility costs and reduce 2,351 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in less than a year. We are also designing our first mass timber school at Poplar Road Junior Public School, a sustainable construction method that improves thermal performance and reduces carbon emissions.

The board is transitioning from gas-powered lawn and garden tools to battery-operated alternatives and expanding its electric vehicle fleet, including eight fully electric cargo vans and five electric school buses, which will serve Toronto Island schools beginning in September 2025.

In 2024, TDSB planted a record 1,494 trees at 86 schools, with a focus on high-needs areas to mitigate extreme heat and expand tree canopies. To enhance environmental education, we also hosted our first annual Climate Camp, providing professional development for teachers and early childhood educators.

Our plan to reduce energy intensity in buildings by 20% and improve mechanical ventilation and cooling in schools will require sustained funding and approvals from the Ministry of Education. We welcome collaboration with the Ministry to support these long-term goals and help make our schools more resilient and energy efficient.

These initiatives demonstrate TDSB’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and inclusive learning spaces where students can thrive inside and outside the classroom for years to come.
